I have the privilidge off meeting beautiful women in my practice that love beautifully, on their children, husbands, friends, neighbors and strangers. The Bible tells us “to love our neighbors as we love ourselves” and these women do this well. For example, Karin, anyone who knows this sweet lady, knows that they can count on her. She is nurse, mother, wife, housekeeper, listening ear, if you need something done, she’s in, you can count on her and know that she will follow through. Karin learned this as a young girl, the oldest in the family, and when mom and dad would fight, the younger ones would climb in bed with her. They felt safe with Karin, she took on a role that was not met for her at such an early age. She figured out by the age of twelve that speaking out to dad for moms black eye, meant that she would get one too. It was not safe to use your voice and speak up.
As an adult and in her marriage of over twenty five years, she still has this amazing servants heart, but to her detriment, while she’s serving others, her needs go unmet. She has an epiphany, during one of our EMDR sessions,[eye movement desensitization and reprocessing] just before she is to go on a trip with her husband. “I am afraid to be alone with him, what will I do, will he want to be alone with me. She states that her distractions have kept her from tending to her needs. We talk about the risk it is for her to ask and voice her needs, she was set up to be for everyone else but Karin.
We talk about honoring her feelings, including her anger. Sounds very foreign, and she is willing to risk the discomfort. Changing the homeostasis upsets the family dynamics. It can be very lonely there, but a risk well worth it,when it comes to self compassion, and self love.
I appreciate Dr.Kristen Neffs work and research on the topic of self-compassion, it hits the mark, regarding the love, kindness , and ability to forgive and let go that Karin has for others, and not able to see and feel her own needs. That same kind of compassion we give to others, we, those of us that our like Karin need to develop for ourselves. Dr. Neffs voice is very soothing and gentle, whether you purchase a book or her audios, you will be encouraged to be kind and compassionate with yourself.
